This magnificent variety grows in one of the most biodiverse areas on earth, the Sierra de las Minas in Guatemala. It is cultivated by the Q'eqchi ' indigenous people, descendants of the ancient Maya. They plant the cacao trees in mixed forests, along with a colorful variety of other crops and trees. These forest gardens contribute significantly to the preservation of the unique local ecosystem.
