Where does our cocoa actually come from??
Have you ever wondered where our cocoa actually comes from? We have collected a few impressions of our partner farm "Finca La Rioja" in Mexico for you.
The fine flavor cocoa variety Porcelana Blanca La Rioja
Finca La Rioja is a small farm in Cacahoatán, Chiapas, Mexico. The chocolate for your Moruga Cacao is made from one of the rarest and finest cocoa varieties from the family's own plantation - the cocoa bean Porcelana Blanca La Rioja. Their name comes from the unusually light color of the bean kernel. Harvested at the perfect time, it unfolds its famous aromatically intense taste that is as light as it is playful.
For the farm's chocolate maker, there's no question that a better cocoa bean can be found elsewhere, because cacahoatán means "place of cocoa" in the ancient Toltec language. The history of cocoa in southeastern Mexico dates back to pre-colonial times. Chiapas was the center of the cocoa trade in Mesoamerica when the Spanish arrived in 1522. Even the very first cocoa brought to Europe to the Spanish court came from Chiapas!
