Does cacao support fat metabolism? New data from sports research
Cacao and body fat: do they even belong in the same sentence? Surprisingly, yes. Studies show that flavanol-rich cacao can help regulate metabolism, reduce body fat and even positively influence hormonal markers. This article explains the scientific background and how you can benefit from it.
1. Visceral fat: the marker that matters
Visceral abdominal fat is considered one of the most critical risk factors for cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders. That makes the result of a randomized study especially interesting: physically active adults significantly reduced their visceral fat after consuming flavanol-rich cacao daily for 10 weeks (García-Merino et al., 2020).
Especially relevant: the participants were already trained, so the effects occurred in addition to exercise. This makes cacao an interesting add-on for metabolically conscious people.
2. Which active compounds are involved?
The effect can be traced back to three key components:
- Flavanols: support blood flow and insulin sensitivity
- Theobromine: activates lipolysis (fat breakdown)
- Caffeine: synergistic in small amounts, as in our Tabasqueño cacao
There is also an effect on brown fat tissue. Flavanols can stimulate thermogenesis there, which may increase basal metabolic rate.
3. Hormonal markers also shift
The same study also observed a decrease in leptin levels, a hormone correlated with fat mass. At the same time, follistatin increased, a marker associated with muscle growth. So cacao is not only antioxidant, but also endocrine-active.
4. What do Moruga's lab values show?
Our Chuncho cacao from Peru shows the following per 10 g serving (one cup) in lab testing:
- Polyphenols: 498 mg
- Theobromine: 122 mg, high for natural activation
- Caffeine: only 8 mg, for gentle synergy without stress
These values make it an ideal addition to fasting days, sports recovery or morning routines. You can find more information in our lab analyses.
5. Cacao or supplements? Our view
Instead of isolated boosters, cacao relies on the synergy of natural plant compounds. These do not only affect fat metabolism, but also mental clarity and cardiovascular health. That is what makes cacao so special: holistic, evidence-based and enjoyable at the same time.
Conclusion: cacao as a smart metabolic booster
For active people, biohackers and anyone focused on body composition, natural cacao with a high flavanol content is more than a ritual. It is functional food with a real effect. Our recommendation: Chuncho from Peru, with lab values that live up to their promise.

I drank while writing: Chuncho from Peru 🇵🇪

Freu mich aufs Ergebnis.
