Yes, 100% cacao can soften or melt when temperatures are high. This is normal for cacao that still contains its natural cacao butter, especially during warm shipping days, in mailboxes exposed to sun or when a parcel sits in a hot car.
The important point: softened cacao is not automatically spoiled. If the packaging is intact and the smell is normal, you can usually use it as intended, especially because Moruga Cacao is melted again when you prepare it as a drink.
Why does cacao soften in heat?
Moruga Cacao is made from 100% cacao and contains natural cacao butter. Cacao butter softens around body temperature. That is one reason why cacao can become creamy in the cup, but it can also become visible during summer shipping.
What are white spots on cacao?
White or lighter marks are often cacao butter bloom. This happens when cacao butter separates visually after warming and cooling again. It may not look perfect, but it is not mold and not a sign that the cacao is unsafe.
What should you do if cacao arrives soft?
- Place it in a cool, dry place.
- If it is very soft, put it in the fridge briefly so it firms up again.
- Do not store it permanently in a damp fridge environment.
- Use it normally for your next cup of cacao.
How to store 100% cacao
Store cacao dry, dark and cool. Direct sun, heaters, a hot car or a warm windowsill are not ideal. In summer, a cool pantry is often better than an open kitchen with direct sunlight.
Does heat affect flavor and quality?
Short softening during shipping is usually mostly a visual issue. If cacao is repeatedly heated strongly or stored warm for a long time, aroma can suffer. That is why we communicate carefully around heat waves and why we use insulated shipping bags when needed.
Preparing cacao after shipping
For drinking, Moruga Cacao is melted with hot water anyway. The preparation guide is here: how to prepare creamy 100% cacao. If you want to compare origins, start with Moruga cacao varieties. For an easy first setup, use the Moruga Starter Kit.
